New Orleans: Soak Up the Scenery:
Think of a Gothic Victorian to make the Addams Family swoon - until they get a look at the deluxe furnishings inside. The Melrose Mansion, a converted inn on the edge of the French Quarter, is a find, but would you pay $425 a day to stay in its Donecio Suite? You might, because its bathroom has a Jacuzzi like no other.
Framed by the windows of a three-sided turret on the second floor, just high enough that you can see out but not be seen, this whirlpool for two evokes images of lazy afternoons and bodies tickled by bubbles. Champagne bubbles. (Did someone say second honeymoon?) Three other suites also come with whirlpools but without the window dressing, and there are four very attractive standard rooms.
For dinner recommendations, be sure to ask the owner Sidney Torres for his favorite restaurants. And don't miss Gabrielle (504-948-6233), just a short taxi ride down Esplanade at No. 3201, for unbelievably creative variations on classic Creole cooking.
